AI, IoT to drive India as a global leader in food processing: Report

India’s food processing sector is rapidly adopting digital and Industry 4.0 technologies — including AI, IoT, blockchain, robotics, and automation — to boost efficiency, food safety, and supply chain transparency, according to a joint ASSOCHAM-PwC report.

With the global food robotics market expected to reach $6.08 billion by 2032, India has a strong opportunity to lead, especially in tackling post-harvest losses costing ₹1.53 trillion annually.

The report highlights both opportunities and challenges. Key hurdles include limited supply chain traceability, low processing coverage, environmental concerns, and a lack of skilled workforce. It also calls attention to the global economic toll of food wastage ($936 billion) and foodborne illnesses ($110 billion).

Government initiatives such as PMKSY and PMFME are aiming to reduce waste and formalize the sector. Meanwhile, shifting consumer preferences — like demand for sustainable packaging, plant-based protein, and clean-label products — are influencing industry direction.

The report urges stronger collaboration between policymakers, industry, academia, and startups, alongside supportive infrastructure and regulation, to help India become a global leader in sustainable food processing.
